Sir Gerry Berragan

Sir Gerry Berragan was a career soldier for 37 years, finishing as the Adjutant General, responsible for all Army personnel matters. Before this he was Director General for Personnel, and was the Director General Army Recruiting and Training for 3 years from 2008-11. He has been involved in designing, delivering and evaluating training for most of his career and has always been passionate about gaining accreditation for the considerable skills training that soldiers undertake. He became the Army’s Apprentices Ambassador in 2008 to lead the effort that resulted in the Army becoming the largest apprenticeships provider in the country, offering more than 45 nationally-recognized training schemes. He brings this practical leadership experience of delivering high quality training and successful apprenticeships at scale to the appointment of Chief Executive of the Institute for Apprenticeships.

  • Assessing the latest updates in working with trailblazers to create standards and assessment plans for higher and degree apprenticeship schemes
  • Discussing the developments through the IfA’s ‘Faster and Better’ initiative to streamline the approvals process for trailblazers
  • Evaluating what constitutes a high quality higher or degree apprenticeship standard and end point assessment and how providers can demonstrate this quality
  • Understanding the External Quality Assurance (EQA) process which monitors end point assessments
  • Exploring how employers,  further education providers and universities can more effectively collaborate to develop new apprenticeship programmes at a higher or degree level
