Head of Faculty for Advanced Engineering and Computing,
Weston College

Mark is Head of the Faculty of Advanced Engineering and Computing at Weston College, both an Ofsted Outstanding and TEF Gold skills provider. The Faculty provides curricula across a diversity of disciplines including aerospace, data analysis and software development. Mark joined Weston College in 2008 following a successful commercial career including Siemens and RBS in the senior management of a variety of technology companies. Mark holds a MEd from the University of the West of England (UWE) and leads a large and growing curriculum, including significant Apprenticeship provision for employers such as Airbus, MoD, Rolls Royce and GKN Aerospace. Mark managed the development and accreditation of the first degree apprenticeship in Digital and Technology Solutions at Weston College, gaining Tech Industry Gold recognition from the Tech Partnership. Currently Mark is part of the leadership team creating the West of England Institute of Technology which is led by Weston College and includes the University of the West of England and three other local colleges as well as a network of key local employers.

  • Sharing the journey to a successful higher and degree apprenticeship programme and how effective collaboration with employers was organised across a faculty
  • Supporting highly effective coordination between ‘on and off-the-job’ training with workplace tasks building on skills developed in the college
  • Ensuring apprentice progression with robust feedback processes, assessment planning and starting points successfully measured against new standards
  • Designing engaging content and teaching delivery to support a high-quality apprenticeship experience which supports high retention and completion rates
