Richard Hamer

Director of Education and Skills,
BAE Systems

Richard is responsible for BAE Systems UK Education & Skills strategy and for ensuring the pipeline of future talent for the company through its links with schools and colleges. He oversees BAE Systems education programme and its schools roadshow, which engages annually over 90,000 young people. He has responsibility for apprenticeship, graduate and skills policy. BAE Systems is one of the largest employers of apprentices and has c1700 apprentices and c500 graduates in development. He helps co-ordinate apprenticeship policy with other employers and has chaired the cross sector Aerospace and Airworthiness Trailblazer group, producing new Apprenticeship and Degree Apprenticeship Standards.  

  • Assessing the lessons learned in the development of apprenticeship schemes up to level 7 and sharing how BAE developed course frameworks with HEIs
  • Understanding how BAE has supported trailblazer development to formulate standards which support the skills and behaviour needs of the engineering workforce up to 2040
  • Analysing the role of due diligence in the designing of an apprenticeship programme and how BAE has sought to ensure standards compliance and quality within the employer-provider model
  • Evaluating what is required to motivate apprentices from the outset to develop, achieve and secure career progression within the business
