Ricky Casey

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)

Since graduating from the University of Surrey having studied Biochemistry in 2006, Ricky has worked in biotherapeutic research & development. Ricky works at GSK in the Biopharm Process Research group based at the UK R&D Hub in Stevenage as a team leader. Ricky leads the Molecule Quality Analytics team that characterises the purity & target engagement of GSK’s medicines, whilst discharging chemical & physical developability risks encountered during the biotherapeutic production process. Ricky manages a team of 10 scientists of varying levels of experience, ranging from level 5 apprentices through to Post-doctoral, evaluating the manufacturability of biotherapeutics from drug discovery to drug development. Ricky is passionate about developing and empowering his staff to achieve their career aspirations; he is currently managing two apprentices.  

  • Understanding an apprentice’s motivations, reasons and incentives for entering a higher and degree apprenticeship scheme and how this can inform the composition of a course
  • Sharing insights from the apprentice’s perspective on the route to becoming a degree apprentice and how employers and providers can enhance the application and induction process
  • Outlining the experiences and challenges of a degree apprenticeship programme and what constitutes an effective scheme for an apprentice
  • Assessing what an apprentice is looking for both from the employer and provider in terms of skill development and developing opportunities for career progression
